![]() ![]() ![]() #Sizewise sioux falls plusIn short, I'm an outdoors guy with not a lot of outdoors options given my line of work that allow me to enjoy an area that offers what I have now, plus more. I'm not afraid to log driving hours or miles walked through the woods scouting, and I am equally happy knocking on doors, communicating and working with landowners to be successful-I owe this to my father and a few other mentors who showed me the value of hard work which has paid off immensely. I do a variety of other hunting, but have become addicted to chasing ducks and geese. Spring and summer I get out and fish as much as possible, while waterfowl scouting begins during the summer and carries on throughout the fall. Milder winters with warmer/longer springs and summers, and a greater abundance of hunting/fishing opportunities are a big draw to me as I more or less revolve around seasons. The real draw for me is being able to live in an area that presents even more opportunity for outdoor recreation than what I already have. We had a snow squall this week that left 3-4 inches overnight last week that had all melted, along with some of the existing snowpack, by that evening. I also like the idea of milder winters.I'm used to at least two or three times as much snow as the Pierre area averages, along with the same bone-chilling temperatures. So, why do I settle on South Dakota? For one, lack of a state income tax and similar cost of living compared to my current area is very appealing. If I made the move, then part of that money would be to cover rent while settling in and making sure I wanted to stay before buying a home. Obviously a lot can change during that time-girlfriend/family, health, unforeseen changes in employment, etc.But in thinking ahead, I want to be able to make the change if the opportunity presents itself, thus will be putting away as much as possible over this time and even if I decide to stay, the money will simply go towards a down payment on a home and land where I currently live instead, so I'm not out anything either way. Once we reach that point, I will be in line to either take her position over or also join her in leaving, having accumulated a wealth of knowledge in my time there that would translate nicely into other higher-paying positions. My current boss plans to be done in three years when her daughter graduates high school to go south where winters aren't so bad (I currently reside in Maine) and there is just more to do. If three years seems oddly specific. It is. Currently work in non-profit/government-based accounting so the area and available jobs fit with my skillset nicely. In about three years, considering a possible move to South Dakota, likely somewhere in and around Pierre if I do. ![]()
